What personal data do we collect?
We may collect and process the following types of personal data which will be highly dependent on specific survey or petition you are completing. The list below is non-exclusive:
Personal identifiers may include: for example, name, email address, telephone number, home address, post code, where you work, job title, local council, the constituency you are in (also known as, if relevant, Constituency Labour Party name);
Characteristics may include: for example, your voting preferences and likelihood to vote for Labour or other political parties, age, gender, ethnicity, academic achievement, location, first language, disability status, benefits status;
Local and National Issues that are important to you, and/or what you think could be done better by any political party especially how Labour could be more relevant and helpful to the issue;
If relevant, motivations for joining the Party or reasons why you may not want to join the Party;
Reasons for attendance at Labour Party meetings or events and/or reasons for participation or non-participation when you attend;
Whether you wish to become more involved in any of Labour’s activities and the type of activism you may be willing to take part in;
Information we already hold about you within either the Electoral Register or communications platforms or Labour Membership platforms;
Your views and opinions on local and national issues, policies and objectives by Labour or other political parties;
Any personal data you volunteer in any free text fields in any survey, from any part of Labour, that you complete; and
If relevant to the survey platform being used, IP address, cookies (specific to the platform) and any user information like browser type or information about how you participated in the survey.
Where do we get your personal data?
We may collect personal data in a variety of ways and at a variety of times throughout our interactions with you. We refer to “direct data collection” when data is collected directly from you and we refer to “indirect data collection” when the data is not collected directly from you. Here is the list of ways we will collect your personal data from you:
From yourself when you complete a survey or petition (direct data collection);
From yourself when you have interacted with Labour in any capacity which may be on the doorstep, at a rally, online (including social media), and physical or digital communications you have had with us at any time where you have provided means for us to provide you the opportunity to complete a survey (direct data collection);
If relevant, from yourself when you became a Labour Member (direct data collection);
Your home address is gained from the ‘Marked Register’ version of the Electoral Register (the record of whether or not people on the electoral register voted at a given election, which is available for political parties to purchase) (indirect data collection);
If relevant, from yourself when you indicated your consent on one of our websites including Labour Shop or other websites we manage as the data controller (direct data collection);
If relevant, indirectly from yourself when you completed a survey presented to you by a survey provider who is under contract to Labour (indirect data collection (also, please refer to that platform’s privacy notice)); and
If relevant, indirectly from yourself where you have signed up to a survey provider’s network and database as an individual who has consented to, or given legitimate permission, to a survey service provider for their data to be used to send them surveys which include political surveying (indirect data collection (also, please refer to that platform’s privacy notice)).
Who do we share your personal data with?
We do not sell any of your personal data or any of the answers you have provided in any surveys. Any data shared with the below categories of recipients is the minimum necessary for the task they have been instructed to carry out on our behalf or in conjunction with us. Each category of recipient is subject to review by the Data Protection Team to make sure they have the right methods in place for keeping your personal data secure.
Where the sharing of personal data is within the context of a product or service being supplied under contract to Labour, a Data Processing Agreement, in accordance with GDPR Article 28 is put in place. This makes sure the supplier cannot use your personal data outside of the list of uses above.
Within the purposes of using your personal data, as listed above, we will share your personal data with the following:
The Labour Party’s centralised offices and digital systems;
Pre-approved digital communications and storage providers;
Pre-approved online survey platform providers (which may include questionnaire and polling platform providers);
Pre-approved platform providers for our copy of the Electoral Register and Labour Membership databases;
Pre-approved Client Relationship Management service providers (digital platform providers used to manage our data);
Pre-approved data collection service providers (conducting a survey and collecting personal data and survey responses on our behalf which will be shared with Labour);
Pre-approved policy development service providers which may include associated think tanks, policy makers and other socialist societies (anonymous and pseudonymous data only unless we have gained your permission when you completed the survey);
If relevant, government departments (anonymous and pseudonymous data only unless we have gained your permission when you completed the survey); and
If they are involved in the survey, Labour Party organisations, Labour Candidates hoping to be elected, Labour Councillors, Labour Mayors and Labour Members of Parliament (MPs).
There may be scenarios where we are subject to a legal obligation to disclose or share your personal data, such as with law enforcement agencies, regulatory bodies or public authorities in order to prevent or detect crime, or prove we have adhered to their request. We will only ever disclose your personal data to these third parties to the extent we are required to do so by law.
Data sharing with a third-party organisation that is not a supplier of a product or service to Labour does not occur unless there is a legal obligation or sound lawful purpose for such sharing. For any such sharing we put a Data Sharing Agreement in place between Labour and the third-party containing specific information in accordance with the Information Commissioner’s Office ‘Data sharing code of practice’.
This will include giving only relevant and often only geographically restricted access to your personal data to our local Labour Party organisations, Labour Candidates hoping to be elected, Labour Councillors, Labour Mayors and Labour Members of Parliament (MPs) so they can all conduct their democratic engagement activities.

In all circumstances, the unlawful and unauthorised sharing of copies of personal data in which the Labour Party is the data controller is expressly prohibited. Any unauthorised sharing of Labour Party data is classified as a data breach which we will record and report to the ICO as required.
How long will we keep your personal data?
We will only keep your personal information for as long as it is necessary to fulfil the purpose for which it was collected. Data shall be reduced, redacted, de-identified, anonymised, pseudonymised or deleted at appropriate times so we retain the minimum amount of personal data possible.
Where you have unsubscribed from receiving surveys from us, this will stop our activity of sending you surveys although will not mean we automatically delete your personal data.
We will delete your personal data when you indicate to us that you no longer want us to keep it. You are able to ask us to delete your personal data as part of your data subject rights. Where we have anonymised your data we will no longer be able to identify where you completed a survey although we may retain statistics and aggregated information which your answers have informed.
